When I’m not role-playing, painting Warhammer, or gaming, I spend my free-time bouldering. Bouldering is a climbing discipline where you tackle short but technically challenging climbing routes, also known as Problems. I think it’s incredibly awesome to be on the wall, because it not only challenges me physically, but mentally as well. You really have to analyze the problem and make a plan to get from A to B. Should I use a heel hook? Should I shift my center of balance further to the left, or be more dynamic in my movement? These are the kinds of questions you have to ask yourself when solving a Problem on the wall.
There are often alot people at my local climbing gym, Copenhagen Boulders Sydhavnen. And when you’re hanging onto a hold with edge of your fingertips, tensing every muscle to push through the Problem, the last thing you need is distractions.
I’m a chubby guy approaching 40. Even though I’m happy with my performance on the wall and my looks, I sometimes become self-conscious. For example, when I’m fully stretched out on the wall and my t-shirt doesn’t quite reach down to my waistband. In those moments, my fupa gets exposed, and I’ve often had to abandon attempts at a Problem because I feel embarrassed about my dad-bod being on display.
